2008 Annual Training a Huge Success

Wildlife Rehabilitation and Release’s 2008 Annual Training attracted a large audience of 110 people, with most of the attendees being new volunteers.  President Janey Powers facilitated the event and introduced the keynote speakers who gave interesting and motivating presentations.  Chuck Carroll, Natural Resources Manager, Beale Air Force Base, gave a presentation on Wildlife Conservation at Beale.  His slides showed off the beautiful scenery and wildlife areas that exist at Beale.Training

Jenny Papka and Diana Granados from The Native Bird Connection followed Chuck with a presentation and discussion about wildlife rehabbing.  The two gave a powerful “tag-team” presentation and elicited such raves as:  “passionate”, “wow”, and “profound and thoughtful.”

After a delicious lunch supervised by WRR members Ellyn Cook and Kim Franza, afternoon presentations included powerpoint shows by Kari Freidig on Small Mammals, Bats, and Raptors and Janey Powers on Songbirds. Several of WRR’s education ambassadors made appearances including, Billy the White-tailed Kite, Oliver the Western Screech Owl, Chester the Great-horned Owl, and Lancelot, the Buff Brahma (yes, that is a chicken!).  Kathy Stebbins and Greg Gonzales, Fawn Team Leaders, spoke on fawns and several rehabbers gave very moving testimonials on the value and joy of rehabbing.

Jay Sheets gave an update on hacking out Barn Owls which was very well received.  One audience member stated that “Jay Sheets was funny and informative.”  Nina Allen gave a short talk on her work with songbird calls.  Many audience members expressed interest in assisting Jay and Nina with their work.

The day went smoothly thanks to the hours of planning that went on beforehand.  Thanks to Ellyn and Kim in the kitchen, Bev Myers handling registration, and all the other volunteer helpers that set-up, cleaned up, unloaded and loaded vehicles, and did whatever was needed, the day was a huge success.
